how life unfolds in public spaces,
subways and sidewalks,
parks and tree-lined streets,
museums and libraries.
reflecting on the passage of time
as earth orbits around the sun
at 67,000 miles per hour.
it’s a life
which i always enjoy;
never avoiding
any pauses in the day
where feelings flow in.
this river of change
is what i always long for.
you are here with me now.
do you hear the unmistakable
notes of gentleness in my voice
when i speak to you?
you gave me this victory.
you also gave me silence,
and you gave me music,
the two things that i always believed
expressed the inexpressible.
so be a little gentler with yourself.
be kinder than you dare to people.
live more fully.
love more deeply.
keep your lightness of touch.
your scent of youthful slumber.
your soul full of harmony.
your absence of personal vanity.
your unfailing consideration.
your rising above misfortune,
which still stirs my human heart.
your affliction by despair,
but still managing to retain joy.
in the lonesome shadow
of these new york buildings,
you stand with due care,
naked for all to see,
as the eternal song
arrives unannounced for you,
every hour of day
and every hour of night.
